Mariners great Julio Cruz has passed away.

Julio Cruz was one of the first Mariners to make a name for himself during the early rough years of the franchise. He was a great base stealer who at one time tied the MLB record for most consecutive successful stolen base attempts and he was great defensive player as well. He was one of my heroes as a young Mariners fan and I was blessed to get to know him personally when he wandered into my store years ago. We became friends and he very generously appeared at several autograph sessions at my store for pretty much free. This was at a time when business was slow and it was a very appreciated favor. Years later when business was better Julio would frequently clean out his garage and bring me anything from his old game used jerseys to autographs and other fun memorabilia. I always tried to pay him as very well in appreciation for all the kindness he had shown me. At one point I had given him a book called “Anxious for Nothing” by John MaCarthur and he really thanked me for it and told me it had been very helpful to him when he was dealing with some stress in life. I was glad to be of help to him. I hope all Mariners fans appreciate Julio as a man and a great representative for the Mariners, both as a player and as the Spanish broadcaster for the team. We will miss him.
